Upon starting a new assignment, it quickly become apparent that a significant amount of working capital was invested in debtors – more than a 33% of turnover was held in debt resulting in a consistent and significant overdrawn position at the bank. Within six months, I helped to completely reverse that overdrawn position such that the business moved to trading with cash in the bank at a level equal to what had previously been their overdraft.
Drilling into the profile of their debt in detail, it became clear to me that whilst the firm had a very high percentage of good quality clients who settled their bills very promptly, old debts over several years had been allowed to accumulate. Working sympathetically with both the lawyers and their clients, I demonstrated that payment could be obtained without jeopardising the lawyer/client relationship. One highlight was a circa £2.0k debt that was close to six years old that I secured payment of – recovering both the original debt and interest via an instalment plan. Perhaps more importantly, that client went onto to recommend the firm to family and friends.
Small but significant successes such as that gave the lawyers and staff confidence to adopt other procedural changes and proposals that I recommended so that together we achieved such a fantastic result for the business.
